Canine Memorial Explodes with Tributes
In April, a terror attack in Stockholm rocked the world. People dodged a hijacked truck as it careened into a department store, killing 5 and injuring about 15 others. Flowers were strewn along the avenue to mark this tragic loss of life. Tourists and residents both stopped by to pay their respects to the victims.
According to a BuzzFeed News report by Francis Whittaker, one life in particular caught the attention of a Swedish web designer and his wife. It was the spot where a dog had also died in the attack. The writer wrote, “Markus Krantz decided to start a tribute when he noticed that no flowers had been left at the spot where a dog called Iggy was hit during Friday’s terror attack.”
A Tribute that included dog treats
To commemorate this canine’s life, Krantz went home and returned with the dog collar of a beloved Jack Russell terrier he had recently lost. Krantz who cares for five rescue dogs, also brought a candle and some dog biscuits.
After a Facebook photo of his makeshift memorial site flew around the world, he learned from Ireland’s Dogs Aid that the dog, named Iggy, was also a rescue dog who had been rehomed by them to Sweden several years earlier.
When the man returned to the site he discovered it had grown dramatically. He reported to BuzzFeed News that the tribute was now one of the biggest on the street.
Along the way, Iggy’s owners made contact with Kranz. They were grateful for the attention Kranz showered on their family friend. They themselves had been unable to get back to the site since the attack happened.
This story is a wonderful example of how caring people can be. It also reflects how the loss of man’s best friend can become a source of grief for so many people.
